Pomeranian Spitz have a very dense, padded coat. It is made up of a thick undercoat and long pony hairs. It is therefore not surprising that the moulting of the Pomeranian is a characteristic of the breed. There are several types and it is important to know the characteristics of each. This will help to identify the causes, prevent various diseases and the usual discomfort.
Types of moult
There are three types of moult: seasonal, puppy and post-puppy. Each period has its own characteristics.
When does the first moult begin in a Spitz? At around 3 months of age and ends at 9. The first stage is the loss of baby on the snout, then on the paws, and finally all over the body. The process can vary. One pet may shed its hair slowly and imperceptibly, while another may shed it very quickly, often to the dismay of its owner. But don’t worry too much: Your pet’s coat will grow back before it is a year old. Remember, too, that the dog’s colour can change and become lighter.
The Pomeranian’s seasonal moult lasts about two weeks in spring and autumn. The top coat is shed first, followed by the undercoat. The pet’s appearance does not usually change.
After giving birth, the dog may lose her coat within a few days. The reason for this is simple: it makes it easier for the puppies to eat and for the mother to look after herself. The coat will grow back after a month of lactation.
