Grooming your Pomeranian is an essential part of your pet’s grooming routine. It will help make your dog look irresistible and like a little teddy bear if the haircut has been done by a professional. But that’s not the only reason to get your puppy’s hair cut.

Why is grooming necessary?

Regular grooming for your Pomeranian is not just about keeping your dog looking good and stylish. The benefits are far greater:

  • Tangles are avoided;
  • Hair loss is prevented;
  • Reduces stress on the hair follicle;
  • The coat feels thicker.

Spitzies should be accustomed to these procedures from the time the puppy is one month old. At first it’s enough to comb against the hair growth. We recommend soaking the Spitzies in water or conditioner first to avoid damaging the hair.

If you find that your pet has tangles, comb them out with a comb treated with a special product. This should be done before giving your dog a bath.

Grooming is especially important in the warmer months because it makes life easier for your dog: he won’t suffer from overheating or sunstroke. And in winter, it’s much easier to dry your dog after a walk and he won’t freeze to death.

There’s no need to go to a grooming salon when your puppy is young, you can do it yourself. Cutting a Pomeranian’s hair at home is not difficult, but it is better to have a professional do the very first cut to see how it is done correctly.

Characteristics

Spitz grooming involves trimming the hair, clipping the nails, brushing the teeth and cleaning the ears. If you like, you can have your dog coloured – it’s quite fashionable these days.

Haircuts are also necessary during the puppy’s moulting period. This is a difficult time, not only for the pets but also for the owners, as their cute litter is often unattractive to look at. If you use a groomer, they will groom the paws and ears without touching the undercoat.

The biggest problem with Pomeranians is tangles. To avoid this problem, the coat should be brushed at least once a week. This should be done daily during the moulting period.

The main focus should be on trimming the hair around the ears. This should be done every few months. The hair should be rounded at the edges. The ear canal should be left open, as the Pomeranian has a very thick coat which can restrict airflow and lead to ear problems.

A Pomeranian should not be completely clipped as there is a risk that hair growth will be affected. This will result in the hair not growing at all or growing unevenly. As complete renewal takes place within about six months, it’s best not to take any chances.

A pedigree haircut for the Spitz is necessary for shows. It is best to use a professional groomer to make sure the pet looks its best.

If you want to groom your Spitz at home, you’ll need a set of tools: a stainless steel comb to remove tangles, a grooming brush, a claw brush and scissors.
