How to choose a true Pomeranian Spitz in the bear type

So you have decided to buy a puppy. You’ve chosen a breed and you want a true Pomeranian Spitz in the bear type. You have done some research on the internet and you may even have noticed that there are several varieties of Spitz. The German Spitz and the Pomeranian are very similar in appearance. When the puppies are small, it is very difficult to tell which breed they are by their appearance. Many breeders and kennels of German Spitz, who have realised that it is possible to sell a Pomeranian for more money, assure that their puppies are Iranian Spitz. People believe them and buy a Pomeranian for a cheap price, only to find out a year later that it is not a Pomeranian, but an ordinary German.

Of course, you can ask the breeder to show you the parents so that you can get an idea of who the puppy is. But where is the guarantee that you will be shown the real parents of the puppy? Who is stopping you from showing a real Pomeranian and telling you that it is the mother or father of the puppy? How can this be verified? Very difficult.

There are also situations where a female German Spitz is mated with a male Pomeranian and a purebred Pomeranian is expected. In this case, at best, we get mixed puppies, for example, short nose but high on the paws, or small but with a foxy snout. Basically, all German Spitz puppies are born the same way.

So you’ll understand that a German Spitz can weigh up to 5 kilos, a Pomeranian up to 3 kilos, and the mini and micro sizes 2 and 1.5 kilos. Even in terms of weight, the German Spitz is 2-3 times larger than the Pomeranian. In addition, the German Spitz, if not mixed with the Pomeranian, has thin legs and a long nose, as well as a floppy coat. If you want your dog to be clipped as a Boo, this will not work with the German Spitz.

So it’s best to go to a trusted kennel first. For example, we get puppies from Thailand and we know for sure that they are Pomeranians because we have been working with trusted kennels for a long time.

Then there’s the price. There are very few kennels that only breed purebred Pomeranian Spitz. The temptation is great to take a German Spitz bitch and get 4-5 puppies compared to 2 from a Pomeranian. Therefore, if the price is low, it is very likely that the puppy is a Small Spitz.

You can tell the difference between a Small Spitz puppy and a Pygmy Spitz puppy by their appearance. For example, even at 2-3 months of age, Small Spitz puppies weigh between 600 grams and 1,000 kilos. They are larger than Pomeranians. However, it is difficult to determine the breed by weight alone. Look at the nose. Pomeranians have snub noses that point up, while the small Pomeranians have noses that point down. Length is also important and makes a difference. A short nose is the first sign that the puppy is of the Pomeranian type. But not the main one, because, as we have already written, there can be a cross with a small Spitz and in childhood the snout will be similar.

As for recommendations, it is better to come to a reputable kennel and see the puppies, so that you can at least visually understand the differences. We are located in Kyiv, our website https://luxpom.com
