The Pomeranian Spitz. History of the breed

The Pomeranian Spitz takes its name from the historical region of Pomerania, on the shores of the Baltic Sea. The native country of the Pomeranian Spitz is Germany, where already in the XVIII century the dogs of this breed became first the favourites of the common people, and then – the favourites of the nobility.

At the same time, the dwarf spitz became more and more popular in various European countries, first of all in England. It was connected with the fact that the favourite of Queen Victoria at that time was Marco Spitz, which she brought from Florence in 1888.

It should be noted that at that time the breed was much larger than today’s standard. At that time, Spitz weighed up to 13.6 kg. However, at the beginning of the twentieth century, the English Kennel Club set a new weight limit of 3.6 kilos.

In Eastern Europe, the Pomeranian Spitz has been known since the end of the XIX century. For example, the favourite of Chekhov’s “Lady with a Dog” belonged to this breed. Nowadays, the Pygmy Spitz is actively bred in Ukraine, as the dogs of this breed are very attractive – both in appearance and in temperament.
