The small, erect ears of the Pomeranian Spitz are susceptible to infections, colds and injuries – something that owners of cropped, large or floppy ears cannot do. Spitz owners don’t need to worry about frostbite in winter, but the area should be given some basic care.
Ear care for the Pomeranian Spitz consists of regular check-ups. You can tell if there’s a problem with his ears by the way he shakes his head and scratches his ears. If you notice any flaking, ulceration, dark brown discharge or redness, you should see your vet as soon as possible.
If your dog sheds a lot of earwax, it’s a good idea to occasionally wipe his ears with a dry cotton bud or cloth soaked in glycerine. Water solutions should not be used and advice should be sought from a veterinary surgeon before using any medication.
The ears of a healthy Pomeranian Spitz do not require any special attention or treatment.
