Buying a puppy is always an exciting event, and if you want the best puppy, then be prepared that a good one will have to be sought after. Be patient and you are sure to find your favourite puppy.
There are many Spitz kennels. There are different types of Spitz, and if you are not sure what to make of it, you may want to read the articles on “How to choose a puppy” and “How to tell the difference between a German Spitz and a Pomeranian”. But in this article we would like to share our experience of buying a Spitz abroad, namely in Thailand.
Thailand is a country where the Pomeranian Spitz breed is very popular. Local kennels have been involved with this breed for a long time and know many of its peculiarities. Thailand also breeds some of the smallest members of the breed, which we call Micro Size, as well as Pygmy or Mini.
In Thailand you can find a wide variety of puppies from large and ugly to small and very pretty, especially if you want a teddy bear type puppy with thick feet, a short nose and a padded coat. Of course this will affect the price of the puppy. No one would sell you a puppy with a pedigree that lists all the parents, champion titles, show titles and all the information about the puppy.
If you do not need a pedigree puppy and you are not interested in how it will be when it grows up, do not worry because you can buy a pedigree puppy anywhere in Ukraine and Russia. But if you really want the best puppy then you can spend time and be prepared to spend a lot of money on finding and buying one overseas.
The first thing you need to do is decide what kind of puppy you want. Breed – German or Pomeranian Spitz. Type – Bear or Fox. Colours include white, black, cream, orange and mottled.
The next thing to bear in mind is that Thais do not speak English very well, so it can be difficult to come to an agreement with them due to the difficulty of translation. It is one thing to arrive in Bangkok and point at a puppy, but quite another to try and choose a dog from a distance. So you need to be prepared that choosing a puppy from a distance will not work. You have to fly to Bangkok and drive around the kennels.
Choosing a puppy is not an easy task. As Bangkok is a big city and the kennels are usually in the suburbs, it would take at least 3 days to visit them, if not more. Of course you will need somewhere to stay, eat, travel and so on. So these expenses need to be added to the cost of a puppy, because it’s not a holiday, it’s the cost of choosing a dog.
Of course you can go to the Chatu Chak market and buy a puppy. But it’s a bazaar. It’s like a chippy. The puppies there are of the lowest quality, usually without papers or vaccinations. At best you can get a dog that looks like a Spitz, but at worst you can get a sick puppy that will die in a few months and there is nothing you can do about it because the vets have no medicine against deadly diseases. The only thing that saves is the vaccine.
Good kennels in Thailand sell their puppies quickly. The whole world knows about the quality of Thai puppies and many people want to buy from Thailand. So there is no guarantee that your puppy will be there when you arrive at the kennel to pick it up. It is very possible that there are no good puppies available. You have to be prepared for this.
Thais have one thing in common. If a Thai customer comes to them they will tell you one price, but to a foreigner they will sell the same puppy but at 2-3 times the price. So if you do not know Thais, be prepared that the puppies will be very expensive. Thais believe that because you have flown to Thailand and want to buy a dog here, you have money and can sell more expensive.
Assuming you have chosen a puppy, make sure you check its condition and health. The presence of vaccinations. There are cases where a seemingly healthy puppy, after a few days, starts refusing to eat for no reason and becomes lethargic. It is better to give up on this puppy as there is a very high risk that it is ill and there is little you can do to help it. In addition to losing money, you may also experience a very bad psychological situation, where the emotions you experience are much more painful than the savings.
In this case, it is better to go to people who have experience and knowledge, as well as trustworthy kennels.
It is also worth remembering that Thai law only allows dogs to be exported when they are at least 4 months old. Puppies are usually sold at 2 to 3 months old. So you’ll either have to make do with leftovers – the worst ones you didn’t buy – or come back in 1-2 months to pick up your puppy.
To take your puppy with you, you will have to go through animal quarantine at the airport. You will have to show the puppy and the vet will check the age of the puppy. This process will take at least a day.
It’s very important to make arrangements with the airline beforehand to transport the dog in the cabin, because if the puppy flies alone in the hold, there’s a high risk that it will be too stressed to drink water and eat because there’s no one to look after it, which could lead to dehydration and even death.
At the airport, the puppy must be placed in a special kennel. You will be asked to show your dog and documents at check-in and when you pass through customs.
During the flight, you will need to keep an eye on your puppy and give him water and food.
When you arrive home, you will also need to show your puppy and his papers to the airport vet to be allowed into the country.
Once you have brought your puppy home, it is essential that you take him to the vet and have him quarantined. This is particularly important if you already have dogs at home. For one thing, no one knows what might happen after a flight and what diseases might appear.
