How to properly trim a puppy’s nails

Home How to properly trim a puppy’s nails
1 (1)

Every puppy and adult Pomeranian Spitz needs grooming. It may seem that a simple walk and bath will suffice, but this is far from the case. You’ll soon find yourself asking questions such as How do I clip my Pomeranian and where do I do it? But first you need to find out what this procedure is for.

Why clip his claws?

The procedure may seem unnecessary. If he walks a lot, there will be no problem as the claws will be ground into the pavement. But that’s not enough, because there are many problems that can arise:

  • Long claws are a carrier for various bacteria, infections and parasites;
  • The dog can scratch itself;
  • If a long claw breaks, it must be surgically removed;
  • An active puppy will have difficulty walking;
  • Claws may grow into the paw pad. This will lead to an irregular gait or lameness, and these problems are not easy to overcome.

The Pomeranian Spitz must be accustomed to such care from an early age. The reason for this is simple: the longer you wait to clip the claws, the harder it will be in the future because the blood vessels will lengthen over time and surgical methods will have to be used to deal with the problem.

You can take your dog to a groomer or beauty salon. And if that’s not possible, you can clip his claws yourself. It’s best to do this at least once a month.

Home care

Clipping the claws of a Pomeranian Spitz is very easy if you don’t know how. You must follow the following algorithm:

  • First, you need to buy a special claw clipper. The best type is a guillotine;
  • Before clipping the claws of the Pomeranian Spitz, moisten a cotton bud with peroxide to wipe the animal’s fingers, as you may accidentally clip a capillary during the procedure;
  • Start trimming from the edge. This should be done at a 45 degree angle. It is better to know where the blood vessels are – there are lots of diagrams on the internet. Clip very carefully to avoid bleeding. If there is a problem, treat the wound with peroxide and make sure it stops bleeding. You can then continue with the procedure.

Home care is not difficult as all you need is a special claw clipper and a knowledge of where the capillaries are. If you’re nervous about doing it yourself, you can ask your vet to do it with you the first time.

Don’t forget the pads of your feet – they need to be treated too. Once you’ve clipped the claws, trim the hair around them. This is enough to make sure he doesn’t feel uncomfortable when he moves.
