Pomeranian shedding

Home Pomeranian shedding
Померанский шпиц

Pomeranian Spitz have a very dense, padded coat. It is made up of a thick undercoat and long pony hairs. It is therefore not surprising that the moulting of the Pomeranian is a characteristic of the breed. There are several types and it is important to know the characteristics of each. This will help to identify the causes, prevent various diseases and the usual discomfort.

Types of moult

There are three types of moult: seasonal, puppy and post-puppy. Each period has its own characteristics.

When does the first moult begin in a Spitz? At around 3 months of age and ends at 9. The first stage is the loss of baby on the snout, then on the paws, and finally all over the body. The process can vary. One pet may shed its hair slowly and imperceptibly, while another may shed it very quickly, often to the dismay of its owner. But don’t worry too much: Your pet’s coat will grow back before it is a year old. Remember, too, that the dog’s colour can change and become lighter.

The Pomeranian’s seasonal moult lasts about two weeks in spring and autumn. The top coat is shed first, followed by the undercoat. The pet’s appearance does not usually change.

After giving birth, the dog may lose her coat within a few days. The reason for this is simple: it makes it easier for the puppies to eat and for the mother to look after herself. The coat will grow back after a month of lactation.

General advice

If you’re wondering how long it takes to moult, let’s be honest: it happens throughout your dog’s life.

Each period has its own guidelines that you can follow to ensure neither you nor your puppy are uncomfortable:

  • Pomeranians don’t look very pretty with a fluffy coat, so it’s best to give your dog a haircut. It’s important that the undercoat is not affected. The ears and paws need to be trimmed. It is also important to pay attention to the diet: it must be balanced, with plenty of vitamins. It’s important to brush your pet regularly, but it’s best to wash as little as possible;
  • In this case, it’s enough to brush his coat every day so that it doesn’t fall out and cause tangles. It’ll also help to keep the house clean;
  • Post-partum. It’s the body’s natural reaction to change, so make sure your Pomeranian eats as much as possible. The coat will grow back on its own after a while.

Moulting in a Pomeranian is a natural process. Don’t panic if your puppy starts shedding and looks more like a Chihuahua. Just be patient and wait for the coat to grow back. And seasonal shedding is nothing to worry about. However, if your pet suddenly starts to lose a lot of hair for no apparent reason, you should see your vet to rule out a number of conditions.
